Eid-al-Fitr, (also written and pronounced as Eid-ul-Fitr) is the first of two Eid’s of the Islamic (lunar) calendar year. It rounds off the month of Ramadan, which Muslims observe every year to acknowledge Allah’s revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad.ﷺ. It is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal (the 10th month). It falls approximately 11 days earlier than the one the previous year when following the Gregorian (solar) calendar.
Eid-al-Fitr is regarded as a time to celebrate, with Muslims gathering their friends and family to show gratitude toward Allah following the previous month of reflection. The holiday serves as a great reminder for Muslims to be grateful for what they have, and to share with those who may be less fortunate.
“Believe in Allah and his messenger, and give charity out of the (substance) that Allah has made you heirs of. For those of you who believe and give charity – for them is a great reward.” This is also called Fitrana = £3 – £5 per person
*Virtues on the day of ‘Arafah:*
1. Sayyidunā Abū Qatādah Al-Ansārī RA narrated that Rasūlullāh SAW was asked about the fast on the day of ‘Arafah. He said “It compensates for the (minor) sins of the past and the coming year.” (Muslim, At-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah)
2. Rasūlullāh SAW has said “Indeed, this (ie, the day of ‘Arafah) is such a (special) day that one who controls his ears, eyes and tongue on this day will be forgiven.” (Musnad Ahmad)
3. Sayyidunā Ana’s Inn Mālik RA said “It would be said regarding the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah that every day is equivalent to a thousand days, and the day of ‘Arafah is equivalent to ten thousand days ie, in virtue.” (At-Targhīb Wat-Tarhīb)
Eid-al-Adha, is the “feast of the sacrifice.” It comes at the end of the Hajj, an annual pilgrimage by millions of Muslims to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia that is obligatory once in a lifetime, but only for those with means.
Eid al-Adha recalls the story of how Allah commanded Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail as a test of faith. The story, as narrated in the Quran, describes Satan’s attempt to tempt Ibrahim so he would disobey Allah’s command. Ibrahim, however, remains unmoved and informs Ismail, who is willing to be sacrificed.
But, just as Ibrahim attempts to kill his son, Allah intervenes and a ram is sacrificed in place of Ismail. During Eid al-Adha, Muslims slaughter an animal to remember Ibrahim’s sacrifice and remind themselves of the need to submit to the will of Allah. This is also Qurbani = 1 goat/ram per person.
